John Singer Sargent
Pintor estadounidense
John Singer Sargent nació el 10 de enero de 1856 en Florencia, Italia, de padres americanos expatriados.
Cursó estudios de arte en Italia, Francia y Alemania, graduándose en la École des Beaux-Arts y en el estudio parisino del retratista Carolus-Duran.
En 1879 tiene su primer éxito profesional en el Salón parisino con el Retrato de Carolus-Duran y realiza un viaje a España durante el cual estudió a los maestros en el Prado.
A comienzos de los ochenta vivió por temporadas en Venecia, París y otras ciudades.
En 1886 se radica en Inglaterra, donde tuvo su estudio durante más de treinta años.
Alrededor de 1907 se inició en la acuarela en un estilo impresionista.
Sus cuadros pueden verse en los mejores museos de Estados Unidos y Europa. A partir de 1907 redujo drásticamente su actividad como retratista de la alta sociedad, la cual había cimentado su fama.
John Sargent falleció en Londres el 15 de abril de 1925.
